Multiple publishers

Post by AlexK » Mon Aug 03, 2020 6:33 pm

I've got couple of books with multiple publishers and multiple ISBNs. By default BookCAT allows one book to have single publisher and single ISBN.
I used one of custom fields with list type instead of publisher table. But this approach doesn't allow to add city to publisher. Besides ISBN is still single, and there's no other custom list field left.
Is there any other way to register such books?

I'd approach it as entering the actual book with it's actual ISBN/publisher.
Then add the other ISBN/publisher as a separate book but indicate it as a reference or some other term you are comfortable with.

In CATraxx I use the STATUS as OWN or REFERENCE.

Thank you for answering!
Unfortunately, having two different entries of the same book in the database is not suitable for me.
Looks like I'll stick to current solution with custom field.

You need to look at why your book(s) have multiple ISBNs.

One reason is that a publisher takes over the unsold stock of another publisher. They might want a different sleeve on it with their brand name on it. They can certainly print off new sleeves, WITHOUT mulching the actual book and reprinting. However they will need a new ISBN number under the rules.

So the book will have one ISBN inside and a new one on the sleeve. In this case the REAL ISBN is the one on the cover. However, these sleeves often get lost/damaged/discarded, leaving the inside ISBN as the only one visible. Good luck separating them!

A club of mine has 2 books with the same ISBN number. What apparently happened, it was a small publisher who purchased a small block of ISBNs. When he used up the small block, he reused one of the first ISBNs. He did this because the original book was Out Of Print.
This is a direct breach of the ISBN rules.

Unfortunately, different sleeves are not the case.
These books have multiple publishers and isbns mentioned inside the book. Sometimes isbn is the same for each publisher, sometimes each publisher has its own isbn.
Have a look at these two books.
The last one even has the third isbn for something what I think is printing company! Isbn on the cover matches the first one for publisher АСТ.
Both books don't have a sleeve.

Hello,
My own way wuld be to record 2 books with links between them.

For this example :
Mike Ashley "The age of the storytellers" ( Oak Knoll Press / British Library )
Oak Knoll Press distributes the book in USA
British Library distributes it in UK
But the book is the same with the 2 ISBN inside.

I create a link between the 2 books
I have the result :
