Post by Azol » Wed Jun 08, 2016 2:41 pm

Anyone ever tried to install CATraxx on Linux distribution - Ubuntu, for example?
Any success?

With or without Wine?

With Wine of course. Running the virtual machine does not count.

I got as far as installing CATraxx on Ubuntu 14.x/Wine 1.9.x combo without any error, but it would not run because it said it could not start the DAO engine. Installing DAO component did not help.
I am stuck. I am in no way an experienced Linux user, so I thought someone has surely tried it as well.

After several attempts CATraxx worked on Ubuntu! I do not know exactly what helped, but the general idea was:
1) install latest Wine build - 32 bit prefix (!!!) I haven't been able to make it work in 64 bit Wine. Look for instructions on Wine website.
2) install Winetricks
3) sh winetricks jet40 (it did not help at first) - this won't work if you have 64 bit Wine prefix, so return to step 1
4) install CATraxx
5) at this point I got DAO error preventing CATraxx from running.
6) I tried to install jet40 again and suddenly it worked!
7) CATraxx is running successfully.

Maybe soon I will try it again in clear Ubuntu environment and will be able to figure out the exact sequence of steps.

Now I can elaborate.

Here is how you make CATraxx 9.x work on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS:
perform these commands in order on a fresh Ubuntu install (Internet connection is required). If you had installed Wine before, rename or delete the ~/.wine directory. It will delete any programs you had installed in Wine earlier.

Code: Select all

1) sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386

2) sudo add-apt-repository ppa:wine/wine-builds

3) sudo apt-get update

4) sudo apt-get install --install-recommends winehq-devel

5) WINEARCH=win32 WINEPREFIX=~/.wine winecfg

(it could ask to install Mono and Gecko at this point - confirm it each time)

6) wget https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Winetricks/winetricks/master/src/winetricks

7) chmod +x winetricks

8) sudo apt-get install cabextract

9) sh winetricks mdac27

10) sh winetricks jet40

(this command will fail for no reason)

11) sh winetricks --force jet40

(force reinstall works fine - guess why? it's a Linux!)

12) wine start catraxx_setup.exe

(install as you normally would, you should have the downloaded setup file in your currect directory)
Voila!

P.S. I submitted the entry for corresponding version of CATraxx into the Wine AppDB - https://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager. ... &iId=33877

More good news: I installed HAPbirthDates via Wine and it works! You can select your database file, press Start then open your CATraxx and the info will be there in the Explorer View. Updating birthday info also works by pressing the corresponding button in CATraxx.

Yay!!!

May be of interest, today I got Catraxx working on MAC El Capitan, using WineBottler and then using Winetricks to install the Access runtime libraries and Jet V4.0.
So far only tested with the sample database but will try later with my record database with over 12,000 entries.
