Printed genres in report

Post by cosmic » Wed Dec 25, 2019 2:35 pm

I've created a report sorted by:
1. Genre
2. Artist name
3. Album title
etc.

When adding albums in the database I've used both Genre.Subgenre definitions, but in the report I want only Genre, not Subgenre. That is, all Genre.Subgenre records should be sorted under Genre, and not splitted into a myriad of headings.
I know I've accomplished this before with this report, but now I get headings like Folk: Rock, Folk: Folk-rock etc when I instead want all different Folk: xxx genre records sorted under only heading Folk.

How should I accomplish this?

Hi Cosmic,

The Genre feature/control has never felt right for me. Probably due to the tie-in with GraceNOT (aka GraceNote).

In the Lookup view for Genre be sure all three fields are populated. Then on the report use the Genre that is under the Library group.

Let us know how it goes!

Thanks Doug, but I'm still quite lost. Probably because I still don't have a sure grip of all the esoteric mysteries in this rather complicated software.
* There are several Lookup views for genre. Exactly where in SW do you mean?
* I can't see Genre under Library group (Ctrl+F4/Select field/Album/Library dialog)

I run Catraxx 9.5.1 (which I assume is the most recent).

Options on your screens make no difference.

And I still can't find Genre under "Library" group. Do you mean Ctrl+F4/Select field/Album/Library dialog?
Or where else should I look for Library/Genre??

My apologies. At some point I moved the Genre to Library group.

Album.Genre is the correct one.

Does using Main Genre work? if you are grouping, remember to change that as well.

Yes! Thank you. Two correct solutions at the same time - from you and Fredrik N, whom I had sent the question as well.
Quite obvious actually - but thing is is that when i tried this before, Group Header field didn't change to Album.Main.Genre as it should have.
Now when I tried, it didn't change either, until I made the selection a *second* time. A bug?
Now the report looks exactly as I want it.

Best regards,
Per

Now that my Genre sort order is accurate, I have another question

Let's say have artist "Buddy Guy" in Name field, and "Guy, Buddy" in Sort field.
Then in the report I get "Buddy Guy", sorted alphabetically by "Guy"- but after "Eric Clapton" for example.

I had obviously misinterpreted the sorting feature.
Is there a way to print the Sort field, strictly alphabetically, instead of Name field - or do I have to change every Name field to get it right?
